The smiles have gone,
There was a time when she could smile without thinking, when laughter would bubble out of her like sludge from a malfunctioning drain. When it didn't take much to make her laugh, smile, giggle, chortle, guffaw, grin.
Not any more.
She's always in the middle of the group, laughing, joking.
But look carefully at her face.
Her mouth curls.
Her eyes yearn.
Beseech.
Envy.
Want.
All she wants is to smile.

Conceived in rehearsal, when I could only fake-smile. Written later, so it didn't turn out like I wanted it to. Thanks to Aldish for the edit advice.

Well written and masterfully edited! I went through a completely different set of emotions that I don't remember feeling, when I read it this morning.

That was..perfect.
I had this assignment for a magazine where i had to write about Envy, about a month ago, and i wrote this lengthy post demystifying envy, but I must day, you've done it way more beautifully, way more effectively. That too, in just about 12 sentences.
Great work!
